The Lord Jesus chose twelve disciples very early on in His earthly ministry demonstrating how foundational discipleship is in the work of the Kingdom. These disciples did not simply follow Jesus around observing His ministry, but Jesus actively involved them in the work early on. The Lord was not interested in gathering followers, but in making disciples. A disciple is someone who does what the Master does. Jesus chose ordinary people to be His disciples and He entrusted His Word and work to them. He spent intentional and intensive time with these few disciples. And most importantly, He never gave up on them.
This is great encouragement for us as disciples. It is also an important calling for us to make disciples in the way that Jesus did. Jesus says in John 20:21, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” (ESV)
