In Galatians 5 the Apostle Paul talks about the freedom that a believer has in Christ. In the context of Galatians, we are free from the law. What that means is that we are free from having to try and earn our salvation by keeping the law, because it is impossible to do so. A works-based salvation does not work! This raises a question – If we are not under the law, does that mean we are now lawless? Does it mean that we can live however we want and do whatever we want?
Paul says in Galatians 5:13, “For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.” The flesh here is a way the Bible often speaks of our sinful nature. When Christ died, He died to save us from sin and godlessness. If we think that our freedom from the law means that we can now continue to indulge the flesh, then we are mistaken.
We were saved to be keepers of the moral law of God. God’s standards have not changed under Christ. But how are we to do that if we have always struggled to keep God’s law? The answer is, with the help of the Holy Spirit. This is what Paul is addresses from Galatians 5:16-26. When we walk by the Spirit we have God’s power at work in us to help us do His will and live for His glory.
