The passage this morning is quite timely for us as a church. It is a passage that causes us to think about the way we give and whether or not we are generous givers. Please note that I will be talking about giving or generosity within the context of a church, since that is the context of the passage before us. But I am not simply talking about Tithes and Offerings, but about a mutual care and help giving to each other within the body of Christ.
Here are few reasons why this is important for us to pay attention to:
- We need to give serious attention to the way we as a congregation give to the Lord.
- Some people think that the church has a lot of money and everything happens for free here!
- Some people just don’t give! We have an unbiblical and unhealthy view of money!
- Within our church community we need to learn to care for each other more through our giving.
- Money is something that is of great importance to our lives. We’re happy when we have it and sad to let it go! We work for it and it works for us. We love it! It was one of the things that Jesus spoke often about – not positively, but negatively. It is the easiest thing to love money.
- More than anything else Jesus says in Matthew 6:24, “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.” Worship God, not money!
