From Faith to Faith

Romans 1:16 – 17 tells us that the righteousness of God is received by faith in Jesus Christ. Our good works, or righteous deeds cannot justify us before God. In fact, there is no human that is righteous before God. God therefore sent His Son Jesus to become our righteousness so that through Him, and by faith in Him we might be saved. This sermon take a deeper look at Biblical faith. Biblical faith is believing from the heart (Romans 10:9, 10). Biblical Faith is a gift of God (Ephesians 2:8). Biblical Faith is persevering in nature (Hebrews 10:39; cf. Romans 1:17). Biblical faith is evidenced by a changing life (James 2:17).

Peter in his first epistle, provides a wonderful description of faith in 1 Peter 1:8–9, “Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.”

Not Ashamed of the Gospel

Romans 1:16 – 17 are key verses in Paul’s letter to the Romans. They form the basis of all that Paul is going to discuss in the rest of his letter. Paul is not ashamed of the gospel because the gospel is the power of God to save people. There is nothing that can change lives like the gospel of Christ can. Paul experienced it in his own life, and he saw the effects of it when he told other people about Christ. Moreover, in the gospel, the righteousness of God is revealed. God freely and graciously credits or imputes His righteousness to those who put their faith in Jesus. It is because of these things that Paul is unashamed of the gospel of Christ, and is eager to proclaim it whenever and wherever the Lord gives him opportunity to do so.

The Gospel of God

What is the Gospel? It is the good news that the Lord Jesus came into the world to save sinners. This gospel originated in the heart of God, and it is about God. Another way to say it is, God is the gospel. He is what the gospel is all about and what we are saved for. This gospel was something that God had purposed before the foundation of the world. God had planned, in eternity, to send His Son Jesus, who was descended from David according to His flesh, but was manifest as the Son of God by His resurrection from the dead. This gospel was taught and brought to us by the apostles, one of whom is Paul. Listen to this message as we begin this series in the book of Romans.

Seek the Lost

In the Luke 19:10, the Lord Jesus says of Himself, “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” (ESV). The story of Zacchaeus precedes this verse where we see the Lord visiting the home of a chief tax collector, one of the most hated men in Israel. Zacchaeus however, had a childlike inquisitiveness about Jesus and he climbed a tree to see who He was. When the Lord visits the home of Zacchaeus, the man is transformed. No one is out of the reach of God’s grace and those who come to Him in humility and faith, He gladly welcomes and saves!

How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? The Freedom of the Children of God

This sermon is from Galatians 4. In this chapter Paul emphasizes our position as the children of God, which also means we have an inheritance as children. There are at least eleven references to synonymous words for children – son, child, children. Those who belong to God through Christ are the children of God. Galatians 4:1-7 is all about how we have become the children of God. Galatians 4:8-20 is Paul personal anguish over the Galatians and his appeal to them to not slip back under the law. From Galatians 4:21-31 Paul uses a story from the Old Testament as an illustration of what it means to be the children of promise and why we ought to stand firm in the freedom we have in Christ.

Redeemed from the curse of the law

In Galatians 3:1-14 this morning we want to look at how God confirms to the Galatians and to us that we are redeemed from the curse of the law. What do we mean by the curse of law, a phrase Paul uses in Galatians 3:13? It is simply Paul’s way of saying that God’s good law is powerless to overcome sin in our lives and therefore only ends up condemning us. And so, the law becomes a curse for us, or we are under a curse because of the law. Christ redeems us from the curse or condemnation of the law by bearing on the Cross God’s judgement that was rightfully due to us.

How is a person saved?

Galatians 2:15-21 Paul gives us a theological explanation of how a person is saved. The Gospel of Christ is all that saves a person. We are not saved by our religious works, or our good works, but by faith in Christ alone. It’s not even faith in Christ plus our good works. It is purely faith in Jesus Christ that brings us salvation. What is faith? It is that simple and sincere confession that I believe in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour. That I cannot save myself, but I am wholly dependent on Him to be saved.
